It follows her debut album from 2020, 'Forever, Ya Girl'.
Chicago-born, NYC-based artist keiyaA has announced her second album ‘hooke’s law’, set to release on October 31st via XL Recordings.
Developed over a span of five years, ‘hooke’s law’ serves as a testament to keiyaA’s survival through self-examination. The album deconstructs and reconstructs her ego on her own terms, creating a safe space to navigate the conflicting roles she experienced growing up as a queer Black woman.
By embracing discomfort and contradiction, keiyaA dismisses the need for tidy resolutions, allowing all her past, present, and future selves to coexist in harmony, tension, and confusion through an expressive mix of jazz, R&B, hip-hop, electronic, and experimental sounds.
According to keiyaA, ‘hooke’s law’ is “an album that explores the journey of self-love, approached from a perspective that isn’t just about affirmations and consumer-driven self-care. It doesn’t follow a straightforward narrative with a moral conclusion. Instead, it resembles a cycle, a spiral – it embodies Hooke’s law.
With this project, I seek to explore and accept anger and conflict, disappointment, and discontent, rejecting the notion of being submissive and the traditional expectations placed on fat Black, brown, and dark-skinned women in our communities. I discuss desire and longing, as well as analyzing maladaptive behaviors and conflict avoidance – the ongoing relationship with oneself.”
Along with the album announcement, keiyaA has released the second single ‘take it’, which comes with a self-directed music video alongside Caity Arthur, following last month’s introductory single, ‘stupid prizes’.
