Vintage Biff that doesn’t deviate from the template...

For the last thirty years, the Scottish band Biffy Clyro has navigated through various styles of guitar-driven music. In their early days, this trio from Kilmarnock embraced chaos and noise, channeling the energy of their transatlantic rock counterparts. Since then, they have established themselves as rock stalwarts: their insistence on large choruses, powerful riffs, and a hint of controlled chaos embodies the Biffy Clyro formula in 2025.
‘Futique’ marks their tenth studio album. Simon Neil describes ‘Futique’ as “an exploration of ideas, objects, or relationships that transcend time. We are often unaware of when something is done for the last time, and there’s a beauty and sadness in that notion.” This may come off as slightly existential for a band known for radio-friendly rock, especially since lyrical depth and storytelling are not typically associated with Biffy Clyro.
The album follows a straightforward structure resembling the PIXIES’ ‘loud and quiet’ dynamic. With gentle verses leading into powerful choruses, this formula has become a hallmark for Biffy Clyro, but it’s not necessarily negative. ‘True Believer’ features those characteristic Biffy Clyro vocal harmonies, ‘Goodbye’ builds up slowly to a chaotic climax, and ‘It’s Chemical!’ stays true to Biffy Clyro's sound. Meanwhile, ‘Woe Is Me, Wow Is You’ might have one of the least appealing titles of 2025, yet it is also the most intriguing part of the song.
It’s uncommon for a band with thirty years of history to attempt a radical transformation, but a slight shift in tone would be refreshing. ‘Futique’ is merely another album from Biffy Clyro. It offers substantial hooks, a few edgy riffs, and polished production. While it stands as a solid entry in their discography with notable highlights, it’s unlikely to draw in new listeners who aren't already fans.
