Bob Dylan's Mention of Shostakovich Sparks Conversation Among Fans

Bob Dylan has sent birthday greetings to the renowned composer Shostakovich, sparking discussions online.

The American artist began using Twitter/X a year ago, and his every post generates significant speculation. Due to his disinterest in giving new interviews and his enigmatic answers when he does, this seems to be the most straightforward connection between fans and Bob Dylan.

Even when he is straightforward, the songwriter manages to obscure – one could argue – the narrative of his life.

Over the weekend, Bob Dylan extended birthday wishes to the late Russian composer Shostakovich.

      He wrote:

Happy Birthday Shostakovich. Tea for Two – Fantastic! You won the bet.

      What does this imply?

It references a wager from 1927, in which conductor Nikolai Malko challenged Dmitri Shostakovich to orchestrate the American tune ‘Tea for Two’ from memory in under an hour, with a promise of 100 roubles for the winner. Shostakovich accepted, completing the task in just 45 minutes.

Given his appreciation for pre-rock 'n' roll American songwriting, Dylan likely has an affection for the song – even if he favors ‘One More Cup Of Coffee’.

While Bob doesn't frequently disclose his classical music influences, he once expressed intentions to pursue that genre. "I was going to be in the classical music field, and I imagine it's going right along," Dylan told an Austin reporter in 1966, shortly before declaring that God was a woman. "I’ll get there one of these records."

In other news, Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series continues with a major release this autumn – ‘Bootleg Series Volume 18: Through The Open Window, 1956-1963’ is set to be released on October 31st.
