“I believe that the more theoretical knowledge you have, the better you can effectively disrupt patterns and make them more engaging.” Congratulations on the release of your debut album, ‘Where The Earth Bends’! Reflecting on the writing and recording process, was there a specific track or moment that ‘unlocked’ the album for you or affirmed your vision for it? This is a challenging question because I'm honestly not sure I had much of a clear vision for the record. My goal was to create a collection of great songs, and the common thread among them relates to what I was experiencing during the songwriting process. I recall that things felt a bit scattered until ‘Dagger Song’ emerged. I struggled with that track - initially, I didn’t think it deserved a place on the album, as I felt it lacked quality. I worked hard to refine the lyrics. One day, I sat down and ran through every line I could conceive for the song and eventually pieced it together, and it suddenly fell into place. Some songs require that level of effort, while others, like ‘Carrot Fingers,’ come out easily.

You have a classical music background - how does this influence your current music-making approach? Has it been more of an aid or a challenge in the DIY, indie scene? Ironically, all my classical training was strictly in violin, and I couldn’t even specify the chords I play on the guitar. I believe I gained the most from developing a good ear early on. It has definitely not been a drawback; in fact, I think I could benefit from additional classical training in my life. The more you know about music theory, the better you understand how to break and innovate patterns. However, I understand how it could also limit some people.

If you could join any band from the past two decades, which one would it be (and why)? I’d choose Dinosaur Jr. If I could play guitar like them and perform really loud with such high-energy shows, it would be a blast.

Lastly, if DIY were coming over for dinner, what would you prepare? I’m not an excellent cook, but I recently learned how to make a great steak, which is arguably my favorite dish. I would serve a nice, juicy steak with bok choy and mushrooms, along with some rice, complemented by a fine dry red wine. Mmmmm, now I’m feeling hungry.
