Amber Mark’s 2022 album ‘Three Dimensions Deep’ offered a consistently pleasurable, cosmically inspired hour blending soul, pop, and R&B, setting high expectations for her next release. Fortunately, ‘Pretty Idea’ meets those expectations: it may not venture into radically new territory, but it’s a more cohesive, focused project, aided by its notably shorter length. Each choice feels meticulously crafted, whether it’s the MJ-esque high notes and guitar riffs on ‘Let Me Love You’ or the selection of featured artists – often a pitfall for albums like this.
Mark’s self-assurance as a singer-songwriter shines brightly, not overshadowed by her collaborators, and rightly so: this album is a remarkable collection of songs that draws the best influences from various decades into a richly enjoyable experience, reminiscent of Anderson .Paak (whose contribution on ‘Don’t Remind Me’ is a warmly welcomed collaboration, showcasing two like-minded artists savoring their journey together). Referencing Alicia Keys and Usher’s iconic track ‘My Boo’ might signal a lack of originality from a lesser talent, but on ‘Too Much’, it demonstrates to Amber Mark's audience that she can stand shoulder to shoulder with the greats. Overall, ‘Pretty Idea’ captures a musician honing her craft and crafting something truly irresistible along the way.
