Niia Welcomes Turmoil With Her Latest Album ‘V’

Niia Bertino has taken the lead once again with her fifth album, ‘V’, released through the renowned jazz label Candid Records.

The album presents a blend of restraint and theatricality, influenced by jazz pianists such as Bill Evans and the psychological mood of film scores. It delves into themes of self-harm, self-deception, self-awareness, and, at times, self-love.

Niia remarks, “The good and the bad coexist, often within the same verse. One moment I’m expressing heartbreak as if it were a role I’ve practiced, and the next I’m quietly acknowledging my role in it all. That contradiction is the essence of truth.”

Co-produced by Spencer Zahn and Lawrence Rothman, the album's cover features Niia in a collar, gazing intently at someone off-screen.

As an Italian-American jazz vocalist and pianist, Niia employs the club-jazz anthem ‘Pianos and Great Danes’ to examine sex as a form of escape. Imagine a baby grand piano at Berghain, and you’re nearly there.

Niia describes the track as “more akin to a film score than any piece from the Great American Songbook,” moving away from jazz standards to embrace something innovative and thrilling.

The album also includes ‘Angel Eyes’, a fresh take on Matt Dennis’ 1946 jazz classic, and ‘Ronny Cammareri’, an ambient instrumental named after Nicolas Cage’s character from the 1987 film Moonstruck.

Niia states, “If I’m going to make my mark in this genre, I must be a disruptor.”
