It's not a scenario most will encounter, but what does one do after receiving an Oscar nomination for a debut film score? Following his collaboration with surrealist filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, experimental pop composer Jerskin Fendrix returns to his roots. Capturing the musical scope of these ten tracks—ranging from heartfelt orchestral ballads ('Mum & Dad') to grand art pop ('Princess') and peculiar jazz/rap rock ('Jerskin Fendrix Freestyle')—is a challenging task. Perhaps it's better to consider this latest work as an expression of post-ironic sincerity (evidenced by the cover art featuring him with a sheep, among other things). While the visuals and title might elicit laughter, the poignant and bittersweet themes he explores in the standout track 'The Universe' illustrate that this album transcends irony in pursuit of genuine, meaningful eccentricity.
The cult duo is set to perform on the festival's main stage on Saturday, July 4th, next year.
