When Jacob Alon released their first single ‘Fairy In A Bottle’ at the end of last year, it was instantly evident that they were something incredibly special. Their intimate, captivating, and brutally honest sound, combining angelic vocals with intricate guitar work, has quickly established them as one of the most significant modern voices in folk music. Additionally, their remarkable debut album, ‘In Limerence’, has received a Mercury Prize nomination. Being at the beginning of your artistic journey and having your debut album recognized in this way is a tremendous accomplishment—how has this made you feel? It’s been very validating. When the album was released, I found it hard to come to terms with and promote it. [Getting shortlisted] has given me a boost; I understand it’s not healthy to base your self-worth on external validation, and I’m not doing that, but now I feel a bit more confident that I can actually pursue this, which is reassuring. Throughout the process of writing, recording, and releasing ‘In Limerence’, you’ve created a strong support network around you. How has this helped you manage the chaos? I think it may be because I didn’t have a clear path into [music] growing up—unlike in London, where creativity seems to flourish naturally—I never really felt that I could become an artist. Thus, I’m not accustomed to seeking advice from others. However, the wonderful Katy J Pearson has been incredibly supportive, along with Kae [Tempest] and Dan [Carey]. They’ve reminded me that transitioning from 0 to 100 isn’t a typical human experience, and that it’s completely normal to have moments of uncertainty!
