VMU Studio has collaborated with Fanatics, the NFL, and Olaolu Slawn for their latest installation, Football x Football. This project was launched in Leicester Square on Saturday and showcased two towering 35-foot inflatable sculptures, featuring distinct, custom designs from Slawn and Nigel VMU, with VMU Studios executing the concept.
The installation, created by VMU Studio and Slawn, consists of two ‘Gameday Giants’ that symbolize the sporting customs of both the US and UK through two distinct sculptures. Led by artistic creators Nigel VMU and Slawn, the UK giant highlights Slawn’s recognizable clown-like motifs while incorporating elements of football (soccer) culture through the NFL X Fanatics jersey.
Accompanying this larger-than-life figure is a US Giant, outfitted in football (NFL) gear along with a headpiece and a personified football. These sculptures are designed to illustrate the connection that both sports foster in their respective countries, as the NFL expands its global reach with the upcoming 2025 international games.
At just 24 years old, Slawn has had a substantial impact across various fields of art and culture. He became the youngest artist to design the Brit Award in 2023 and has collaborated with music superstars like SZA, Beyonce, and A$AP Rocky, undoubtedly raising the bar for aesthetics and design since his entry into the art scene.
Additionally, his incursion into the sports domain has seen him contribute to some of the most significant events on the sporting calendar, from The Emirates FA Cup to Formula 1 at Silverstone. His partnership with VMU Studio continues this trend, bridging the Atlantic through his distinctive caricaturistic style and making a bold statement as the London games approach.
VMU Studio, comprised of brothers Nigel VMU and Leke Lex Anthony, is a multi-disciplinary studio based in London that operates at the nexus of contemporary art and product design through public installations. With achievements in fashion, art, and streetwear, they have previously collaborated closely with Slawn on public sculptures related to the FA Cup and with Nike for an Air Max collaboration. The contributions of Nigel as an artist and Lex managing production and strategy are crucial to the success of this project.
