Folk singer-songwriter Nell Mescal has just released her second EP, ‘The Closest We’ll Get,’ today through Atlantic Records.
Tonight, the 22-year-old kicks off her role as the supporting act for HAIM’s UK tour, followed by her own headlining tour in November, with a performance scheduled at the Islington Assembly Hall in London on November 19th.
The EP opens with ‘Middle Man,’ a track that explores the possibilities of a relationship that never fully materialized. Mescal urges the subject of the song to face the underlying issues and end things before there’s emotional pain: “Come on, be brutal: cut out the middle man.”
Mescal characterizes the EP as a “collection of songs that narrate the story of two people navigating the ambiguous space between friends and lovers.
“Each track reflects how existing in that gray area influenced me and, consequently, the ‘friendship.’”
Her 2024 debut, ‘Can I Miss It For A Minute?’ established her as one of Ireland’s most genuine songwriters, but this was only the beginning.
Today’s six-track EP was produced by Philip Weinrobe, who is well-known for collaborating with Adrienne Lenker, Billie Marten, and Cass McCombs.
Clocking in at just 24 minutes, ‘The Closest We’ll Get’ may be brief, but it is raw and powerful: a candid showcase from the artist.
