Fan Life: Yungblud Discord

The internet has united fans in unprecedented ways, creating safe environments for communities to thrive. The music industry relies heavily on its fans. From the devoted teenage followers of Frank Sinatra, through the fervor of Beatlemania, punk, hip-hop, and more, fans have played a crucial role in shaping and defining subcultures while elevating their favorite artists to global recognition.

Though the 21st century has drastically altered how we consume music, these changes have merely highlighted the essential role fans continue to play. K-Pop fan groups span the globe, Taylor Swift's tours can trigger significant economic impacts, and the Oasis reunion has brought together different generations through months of memorable performances.

Spotify’s Fan Life initiative seeks to investigate and build on this concept. Through two parts, this global project focuses on the movement, sound, and energy that fan communities embody, examining fandoms that gather around a diverse array of artists, including Charli XCX and Sleep Token, Lil Uzi Vert and Pitbull.

James, who lives in rural Lincolnshire, manages the official Yungblud Discord server, the heart of the British star’s Black Hearts Club. "When a fan community is well-structured, it acts as a safe space,” James shares. “It creates an environment for connection and music discovery. For fans unable to attend shows, virtual connections still foster a sense of community.”

This sense of authenticity is vital in conveying the fan experience; it is a peer-to-peer interaction, and any disruption can change everything. “It’s crucial for individuals to be their authentic selves," James emphasizes. Yungblud’s message of sincerity resonates within the fandom, with the Yungblud Discord serving as evidence. “Everyone desires to express themselves,” he notes, “and they find belonging through that. The connection to the lyrics cultivates a feeling of family and community.”

Yungblud has a presence on the Discord channel, and James even spotted himself in the official footage from a sweaty performance at OVO Wembley Arena. “Yungblud endeavors to connect with as many fans as possible,” James remarks. “This is a key reason so many people admire him – he invests time into forming that personal bond.”

Such experiences are invaluable to fans, often immortalized in merchandise. James left his first Yungblud concert with unique rubber duck memorabilia from his idol and later obtained an autographed print at the impressive BludFest event at the Milton Keynes Bowl.

James describes how empowering his role on the Yungblud Discord has been and mentions the “incredibly rewarding” conversations he has had with fans worldwide, whose ages range from their mid-teens to mid-40s. “As a community manager, I’ve gained a lot of confidence from engaging more with the fanbase, attending more shows, and perhaps stepping a bit out of my comfort zone.”

Hen Ogledd will unveil their new album ‘DISCOMBOBULATED’ on February 20th.

This quartet brings together talented artists from various backgrounds, with Dawn Bothwell, Rhodri Davies, Richard Dawson, and Sally Pilkington collaborating in a freeform yet cohesive manner.

The new album has emerged, with sessions for ‘DISCOMBOBULATED’ recorded alongside producer Sam Grant at Blank Studios in Newcastle.

Scheduled for release on February 20th through Weird World, Hen Ogledd – derived from the Welsh phrase for ‘The Old North’ – seems to create something greater than merely the sum of its individual components. “There’s something about Hen Ogledd that’s not like a typical band,” remarks Richard Dawson. “It’s something… different.”

The new track ‘Scales will fall’ is captivating – a highly organic song that skillfully navigates the edges of folk, post-punk, and post-rock, while resisting confinement to any specific genre.

Referencing the Durham Miner’s Gala before evolving into a horn-infused rhythm, ‘Scales will fall’ genuinely takes listeners on an adventure.

“Perhaps Hen Ogledd is more like a family than a band,” shares Sally Pilkington. “There’s something quite special about incorporating children’s voices into the music.”
