It has been over 60 years since The Beatles disbanded, yet new fans continue to discover their music every day. A fresh edition of Anthology has just been released, and with four biopics on the horizon, the Fab Four are arguably making a significant impact on cultural discussions, reminiscent of their Beatlemania peak. We’ve been reflecting on some of our cherished iconic moments from the Liverpool band's time together, including a classic penned by Paul McCartney while John Lennon was asleep.
The duo frequently wrote side by side, with a friendly rivalry spurring The Beatles' progress. One day in 1966, Paul McCartney visited John Lennon at his house, only to find John still in bed. Taking his guitar outside, he began playing a few chords, leading to something magical.
This marks the inception of ‘Here, There And Everywhere,’ one of the most captivating tracks on The Beatles’ album ‘Revolver.’
In Barry Miles' 1997 book, Many Years From Now, Paul recounts arriving at Lennon’s Kenwood home to write songs. “I sat by the pool on one of the sun loungers with my guitar,” Paul recalls, “and started strumming in E, and soon had a few chords. By the time he woke up, I had nearly completed the song, so we took it indoors to finish... John might have contributed a few last words... But it’s very much me; it's one of my favorite songs I’ve written... I’d say my contribution was about 80-20 on that.”
Musically, the song evokes the contemporary work of the Beach Boys, while the lyrics could be inspired by Paul McCartney’s affectionate relationship with Jane Asher.
In Paul’s 2021 book, The Lyrics, he mentions: “When crafting lyrics for ‘Here, There And Everywhere,’ we aimed to emulate the intros of some of our favorite older songs with completely meandering beginnings… consider (the 1934 track) ‘Anything Goes.’”
The band required 13 takes to obtain the right backing track during their Abbey Road sessions, with Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and George Harrison spending three days perfecting the floating harmonies.
Enjoy the song again below.
