Jeremy Corbyn has spoken about the views of Kneecap and Bob Vylan regarding Palestine.
The UK politician has consistently advocated for Palestinian solidarity, and the MP for Islington North is currently involved in establishing Your Party, a new platform for Left Wing ideas in British politics.
In a recent interview, Jeremy Corbyn talked to the 101 Part Time Jobs podcast, hosted by Giles Bidder. Their discussion ranged from Corbyn's early days in a skiffle band to his lack of dancing skills, while emphasizing the significant role of music in our lives.
The topic shifted to Kneecap and Bob Vylan, both of whom have been outspoken advocates for Palestine.
“It’s been pivotal for those bands, in fact,” Corbyn remarked. “Kneecap and Bob Vylan have benefited from it positively,” he added. “I don’t criticize them at all, quite the opposite. They’ve handled it very well.”
The host inquired about the importance of artists using their platforms. “Absolutely essential,” replied Corbyn. “I believe they should, and there’s nothing wrong with any artist stating, ‘I think what’s happening in Gaza is unjust. Here’s why I believe it’s unjust’.”
“Or, [they might say] ‘I’m donating the proceeds from this song to refugees worldwide’. I think that’s commendable. Some musicians – like Joan Baez, who is retiring now – have dedicated their lives to performing for others.”
Corbyn then asserted that Joan Baez “probably influenced far more people than 1,000 speeches from 10,000 politicians.”
The North London activist, known for the Grime 4 Corbyn movement, shared that he still appreciates rap music from time to time. “I enjoy listening to rap, but it can be tough to keep up with everything. And you can never find the written lyrics of rap, can you? They don’t exist. It changes so quickly. But the talent of a rap artist… seemingly without any prompts. It’s like a flight of the imagination.”
