Ikonika has released their new album ‘SAD’ in its entirety.
The producer’s intricate and diverse portfolio spans various styles, with Ikonika's often playful yet always focused exploration of the experimental illuminating club conventions with deeply personal insights at times.
Released now, ‘SAD’ is a transformative work even by their own standards. It embraces pop while incorporating the lasting influence of their Egyptian roots and the innovative production styles from South Africa, Gqom, and Bacardi.
Thematically, the album explores parenthood through various perspectives, as Ikonika reconciles their identity as a queer trans individual.
Tracks addressing the complexities of their life mirror a blend of vibrant 80s synth tones and striking rhythmic bursts.
“This album traverses the seasons of your mind. It reflects my closest understanding of my ultimate form,” comments Ikonika, also known as Sara Chen.
Available now via their long-time label Hyperdub, the album concludes with a feature from interdisciplinary artist and writer Tice Cin, the sole vocal collaborator on the record.
