France Grants Intangible Cultural Heritage Status to Electronic Music

The French government has granted Intangible Cultural Heritage status to the nation's electronic music scene.

France has a strong electronic music tradition, from the iconic albums of Jean-Michel Jarre in the 1970s to the rise of French Touch with artists like Daft Punk and Justice.

This recognition of the electronic scene is a significant milestone, serving as the initial step towards achieving UNESCO heritage status for French Touch, a feat accomplished by Berlin techno the previous year.

Jean-Michel Jarre has been an advocate for this recognition, stating: “I’m pleased to see electronic music being acknowledged within world heritage, especially after more than three decades as a UNESCO Ambassador and representative for intangible culture.”

During the announcement on December 17th, French Culture Minister Rachida Dati remarked, “Electronic music rightfully belongs in our national intangible heritage.”
