Björk Urges Greenland to Seek Independence

As Trump intensifies calls for the annexation of American territory...

Björk has once again expressed her support for Greenland’s independence.

The Icelandic singer released a new statement overnight, urging Greenland to secure an autonomous future. Currently a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, the Trump administration has increased its calls for the country’s annexation.

“[C]olonialism has consistently given me chilling horrors,” she wrote on Instagram, “and the thought that my fellow Greenlanders could transition from one harsh colonizer to another is too brutal to even consider.”

Iceland was under Danish rule until 1944 and has flourished as an independent nation. Björk’s song ‘Declare Independence’ from 2007 remains a key part of her live performances, which she often uses to advocate for the independence of other nations, such as Scotland during the lead-up to the 2014 referendum.

In her statement regarding Greenland’s future, Björk mentioned the lawsuit filed against the Danish government by 143 Greenlandic women who alleged they were fitted with IUDs without their knowledge or consent; she also noted the “parenting competency tests” conducted by Danish authorities that resulted in Greenlandic parents being separated from their children.

Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen referred to Trump’s recent comments as “very rude and disrespectful.”

CLASH interviewed Björk last year for an in-depth cover story; “That’s always been my view on music. It encompasses all styles, genres, ages, and races. Everything!”
