The passing of Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, co-founder of black midi, has been confirmed.
The London musician was instrumental in the band's formation, playing guitar and providing vocals during their remarkable early live performances. black midi received immediate praise, with Matt contributing to their debut album, the 2019 release ‘Schlagenheim’.
After leaving the band, he stated that his departure was to prioritize his mental health. His bandmates expressed their support, saying, “We’re all fully behind our best mate in his recovery and can’t wait until we can all be together and play again soon!”
Earlier today, Rough Trade Records confirmed the sad news of Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin's death.
“It is with profound sorrow that we, as a family, share the news that Matthew Kwasniewski-Kelvin has passed away following a long struggle with his mental health,” the label explained. “A gifted musician and a gentle, loving young man has finally succumbed, despite all efforts. Matt was just 26 years old.”
The statement continued: “He will always be cherished. We encourage everyone to check in with your loved ones to help prevent tragedies like this from affecting our young men.”
