BBC Radio 1 has announced Skye Newman as the winner of its annual Sound Of poll, determined by votes from over 170 industry professionals including Elton John, JADE, Dua Lipa, and Olivia Dean. Other nominees this year included rap star Jim Legxacy (runner-up), alt-pop newcomer sombr (third place), cult favorites Geese, and Australian indie band Royel Otis. The South East London singer-songwriter made her debut in March of last year with her single 'Hairdresser', later achieving a UK Top 5 hit with her follow-up track 'Family Matters'. Drawing inspiration from artists like Amy Winehouse and Adele, Skye is known for her lyrical depth and powerful vocals, and she has already opened for fellow confessional-pop artist Lewis Capaldi on his 2025 UK and Ireland tour. "I’m still in shock that I’ve won Radio 1’s Sound of 2026!" Skye expressed regarding the award, which has previously been presented to artists like Sam Smith, Celeste, and The Last Dinner Party. "So many artists I’ve admired over the years have received this honor - and now I’m one of them. It’s incredible to think that Sound Of started in 2003, the year I was born, and now I’m a winner. I’m incredibly grateful and wouldn't be where I am today without my supporters and the BBC backing me on my journey. Thank you!" You can view Skye’s performance from Radio 1’s Sound of Live gig here:
