Following six deeply personal solo albums, Sharon Van Etten seems to have reached a turning point. If one were to interpret the title of her latest full-length album literally, a shift would be anticipated. True to that notion, she has incorporated two members from her live band during the 'We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong’ tour — bassist Devra Hoff and drummer Jorge Balbi — into her songwriting process. Teeny Lieberson from TEEN adds her talents on various instruments. The outcome of this first album under the name The Attachment Theory is not a complete overhaul; rather, those acquainted with Sharon’s previous two albums will recognize the familiar stormy, synth-driven foundation, a style she initially explored on 2019’s ‘Remind Me Tomorrow,’ which has proven successful both in recordings and in her increasingly powerful stage presence. The new band appears to guide her along a singular creative path; unlike her earlier works where more rock-oriented tracks were interspersed with slower, introspective songs, this time she opts for a straightforward synth-rock approach.
Recorded in London, her British influences are more pronounced than ever, with echoes of Depeche Mode evident throughout. The standout track ‘Southern Life’ pays homage to the experimental sounds of Manchester bands such as Happy Mondays and the ‘A Storm in Heaven’-era Verve. Devra’s exceptional contributions particularly add a vibrant rhythm to the album, as exemplified in the track ‘Trouble,’ resulting in songs that carry anthemic qualities and universal lyrics. One might speculate that, in a different era, this could have been the album that propelled Sharon Van Etten to arena-level fame; it possesses a stylishness and confidence that stands out.
