‘Wine/Weapon’ explores the theme of caring for someone by understanding their origins, embracing vulnerability, and fostering trust.

Disaster Kid, based in Chicago, affectionately refers to their sound as “nostalgia rock,” which becomes apparent after experiencing their latest single. Singer/songwriter Seamus Kreitzer blends past and present in his music, lyrics, and emotions. This characteristic has been evident since the band’s first single “Your Room” debuted in 2018, but it’s in their latest tracks that Kreitzer’s ability for poignant reflection and sentimentality truly shines. The beautifully tender and emotional “Wine/Weapon” sees Disaster Kid celebrating love as an act of vulnerability and trust, joy and pain. They welcome the light, aware that it entails some darkness as well, but embrace it nonetheless.

exit the shower a delicate rose
dance in a towel
to a song no one knows
i look like a gentleman
i smell like a purse
i can be a drama queen
huge stains in my shirts
the cheek of my dad
more bark than my bite
holder your hand outside
the frank lloyd wright
chapters and doors
and inherited crime
i could find yours then
if you could find mine
love is a wine
love is learning your weapon
Atwood Magazine is excited to premiere “Wine/Weapon,” Disaster Kid’s second (and final) single from their upcoming debut EP, Rare Bird (set for release on March 21st). Following January’s lively and jangly “Interstate Runner,” the tranquil “Wine/Weapon” reveals the band’s softer, sweeter side.
Led by Seamus Kreitzer alongside Mason Stahl, Connor Criswell, Max Berg, and Andrew Tereick, “Wine/Weapon” serves as a warm and comforting musical embrace; offering heartfelt warmth and insightful reflections on what it truly means to love someone fully and receive all of them in return.
“‘Wine/Weapon’ is about embracing vulnerability and learning to trust,” Kreitzer shares with Atwood Magazine. “Surrounded by gentle guitars and soft harmonies, ‘Wine/Weapon’ straddles the line between reveling in someone’s warm intoxication (Wine) and coming to terms with their collateral damage (Weapon).”
He continues, “I penned most of the song immediately after watching an episode of ‘The Last of Us.’ The experience took me by surprise emotionally, especially regarding the themes of trust.”
While the verses capture intimate moments of connection and togetherness, Disaster Kid reaches an emotional peak in the chorus, where they harmonize, “Love is a wine, love is learning your weapon.” This message is rich with depth and a touch of drama, acknowledging the complexity and, ultimately, the beauty of loving someone. A truly moving example of “nostalgia rock” at its finest, “Wine/Weapon” is a striking track brimming with raw emotion and genuine vulnerability, making it the ideal song to share with a special someone this Valentine’s Day—just be sure to focus more on the wine than the weapon.

from the edge of my bed
to the front of my knees
lay down your head
and i’ll put you at ease
heavy with you like some gauze on my leg
we pause and we play
we hit command save
when it’s your birthday i’ll write you a card
on the fourth of July we’ll sit in my yard
i might mislead you, you might do so in kind
the fear of being open
the fear of being left behind
