Soul legend Tommy Hunt has passed away.
The singer's family has confirmed the news through a statement shared on his social media platforms. Tommy Hunt was 91 years old.
It is with profound sorrow that we announce on the evening of February 12 that Tommy has departed peacefully in his sleep. His only regret would have been not being in his own home, as circumstances did not permit it. He was the kindest and most wonderful person anyone could encounter, and he cherished all of you. Please remember him always; his last wish was for his music to continue living on. He would have liked everyone to listen to Sammy Davis Jr.'s "I Got to Be Me," as it reflected his philosophy of life.
As Tommy would say, “Goodbye for now, love you all.”
Born Charles James Hunt, the singer initially enlisted in the US Army but went AWOL to care for his ailing mother. After serving time in prison for this act, he joined the doo-wop group The Flamingos upon his release, achieving several hits, including the timeless "I Only Have Eyes For You."
Transitioning to a solo career in the early 1960s, Tommy Hunt's dynamic performances turned him into a live sensation, mixing bold R&B styles with a smoother touch. An artist known for touring extensively, he released music frequently during the 1960s, earning a devoted following within the UK underground scene.
Performing at the second anniversary of the renowned Wigan Casino all-nighters, Tommy Hunt established a strong connection with the Northern Soul movement. Over the years, his records discovered new audiences, and the mutual admiration between the American artist and fans in Northern England made him an unexpectedly popular, yet well-deserved, household name.
