Ezra Furman has announced the release of her tenth studio album, titled ‘Goodbye Small Head,’ which is set to come out on May 16th through Bella Union. This album follows her 2022 release, ‘All Of Us Flames,’ and has been introduced with the lead single ‘Grand Mal’—a sweeping track enriched with strings (named after an old term for a seizure) that features a captivating video with Ezra herself. The album delves into “the experience of completely losing control.”
Discussing ‘Goodbye Small Head,’ Ezra shared: “These songs are filled with intense feelings. They don’t portray someone spiraling out of control; rather, they capture what’s inside that person’s heart. This poetry, my poetry, emerged during the storm, created as I balanced on the brink. (I made the edits once I was safe again).”
She further described ‘GSH’ as a band reaching a new height in their craft. “If I were a music journalist, I would label this an orchestral emo prog-rock album with sprinkled samples. Thankfully, I’m not a music journalist! I view this music as cinematic and powerful. A friend remarked that it resembled 'the coolest movie soundtrack of 1997,' and I’m quite happy with that description.”
She acknowledged its darker elements, saying, “Is it dark? Yes! But is it also filled with wonder, intertwined with psychedelic beauty, and triumphantly wounded? Absolutely. [...] This music gives us a glimpse over the edge into the terrifying and stunning world that exists beyond the ordinary. Join me in this exploration, won’t you?”
