The Murder Capital - Blindness

While The Murder Capital’s debut album, ‘When I Have Fears’ (2019), offered a poetic post-punk melancholy, their follow-up, ‘Gigi’s Recovery’ (2023), revealed a more atmospheric introspection. ‘Blindness’ represents a significant advancement, showcasing a dynamic and eclectic project filled with self-assurance. Nevertheless, they haven’t completely abandoned their signature sound; tracks like ‘Moonshot’, ‘Can’t Pretend To Know’, and ‘Death of a Giant’ reflect their roots. Alongside this, there are exhilarating departures, such as James McGovern’s beautiful vocals in ‘Born Into The Fight’ and the bluesy rhythm of ‘A Distant Life’. In the closing track ‘Trailing a Wing’, the combination of creaky guitars and raspy vocals invokes the essence of Nirvana. A prime illustration of this evolution is found in ‘Love of Country’, reminiscent of Nick Cave, where the band critically explores themes of hatred and contemporary Irish nationalism over intense guitar work in a remarkable six-minute span. Although it might be their most succinct work yet, it still incorporates rich moments of indulgence. The vibrant instrumental introduction in ‘That Feeling’ is begging for a live performance, while the track’s sudden eruption of anger halfway through creates a stunning transformation. Similarly, the intricate twists and turns in ‘Love of Country’ establish it as the album's standout track. With ‘Blindness’, The Murder Capital has created an album that feels both pressing and timeless. In simple terms, it’s an undeniable triumph.
