Everyone enjoys a compelling underdog narrative.
We witness a small, seemingly insignificant entity soar to success through perseverance and commitment. It feels like ages ago when Wishy released the Paradise EP in 2023, which captured attention and marked them as an artist worth watching. Following a lengthy tour that highlighted their remarkable collaboration, the much-anticipated debut album, Triple Seven, was finally released in August 2024. The album earned enthusiastic reviews, and the audience quickly became devoted fans of the Midwest quintet, welcoming the new sound and cathartic lyrics they craved. Unbeknownst to us, Wishy's journey was just beginning.
Just months later, they unveiled “Planet Popstar,” an outtake from earlier recording sessions. This vibrant track showcases their signature riffs and a shoegaze ambiance, explaining why it might have originally been intended for the album. It was a delightful surprise for listeners still yearning for more, but we soon discovered this was actually the title track for the upcoming EP, Planet Popstar (set to release on April 25, 2025, via Winspear). Alongside this major announcement, Wishy released the opening track, “Fly.”
Planet Popstar – Wishy
It’s safe to say I don’t feel great every day
Even when I reflect
I’ve got nothing to prove
I’ve found a way to appreciate life each day
Even as I pause and wait
Knowing that I have to fly
“Fly” embodies the essence of Wishy. The melody glides effortlessly as Nina’s ethereal voice weaves and evolves, a constant presence throughout the band’s previous works. The gentle guitar chords lend the song a slight pop vibe while still adhering to the iconic ’90s-inspired sound reminiscent of bands like The Sundays, Gin Blossoms, and other legends of that era.
“This song expresses a universal theme of cherishing the moment, being in love, and not taking oneself too seriously,” explains Nina Pitchkites of Wishy. “Kevin, Steve Marino, and I co-wrote this song around the same time we were working on ‘Triple Seven.’ It was one of several demos Steve presented for us to explore.”

Wishy’s ‘Triple Seven’ Provides a Ten-Course Tasting of Catchy Hooks & Delightful Bites:: REVIEW ::
Wishy consistently infuses their lyrics with an emotional depth that enhances the overall feel of a track, often reflecting on everyday experiences or our past and future relationships. “Fly” is a celebration of simply being thankful for the gift of life.
The chorus, “But you say, count your blessings. Time will move along,” serves as a mantra worth repeating.
In other words, this too shall pass; we should stop worrying and focus on the present.
In the most challenging times, everyone should tune in to Wishy. Count your blessings and seek joy.
