An exhilarating dose of rebellious alt-rock...
05 · 03 · 2025
If you've somehow missed it over the last ten years, 90s alternative rock is definitely making a comeback. The Hastings trio HotWax is the latest group to embrace this style, having established a formidable reputation in the live music scene over recent years. As is often the case with such bands, the wild energy doesn't completely carry over to their debut, ‘Hot Shock’, but it remains a mostly enjoyable introductory work.
The most captivating moments emerge towards the end of the album. ‘Chip My Teeth For You’ features dynamic rhythms and twisting riffs to exciting effect, while the acoustic finale ‘Pharmacy’ highlights Tallulah Sim-Savage’s beautiful falsetto vocals and melodies reminiscent of PIXIES.
