Robert Plant’s Sole Regret Regarding Led Zeppelin

Robert Plant’s Sole Regret Regarding Led Zeppelin

It distanced him from his family…

New documentary Becoming Led Zeppelin examines the ascent of the legendary rock band, chronicling their journey from initial rehearsals to global domination. However, as the band's popularity grew, it meant being away from their families – leading to enduring regrets.

The charismatic frontman Robert Plant may have personified the modern rock star image – with his flowing hair and powerful voice that filled stadiums – but as the 70s progressed, he longed to embrace the role of a father. With his young family expanding rapidly, the countless nights spent on the road began to take a toll.

Reflecting on his past, Plant recognized that he hadn’t formed a close enough connection with his daughter Carmen, to the point where she saw him as a stranger in her life.

“What I remember from the first two years is my daughter not really knowing who I was,” Plant shared. “She would get quite upset when I returned from tour, thinking I had come to rob the house.”

The situation reached a peak in 1977 following a profound personal tragedy – the loss of his five-year-old son Karac.

The singer recounted to Louder Sound: “In 1977, we lost our son, Karac. He was only five. I had spent so much time trying to be a good father, yet at the same time, I was deeply engrossed in what I was doing with Zeppelin. So when he passed away, I questioned: ‘What is it all for? What does it mean?’”

This tragedy solidified Robert Plant’s unwavering dedication to his family – the band's touring was paused, and it took Led Zeppelin over two years to return to performing. When they finally did, it was in England – close to Plant’s home – for two record-breaking shows at Knebworth.
