These New Puritans have revealed details about their upcoming album, ‘Crooked Wing’.
This will be the band's fifth album and their first release in six years. It is set to come out on May 23rd, with sessions supervised by Jack Barnett and Graham Sutton, a pioneer of Bark Psychosis, and produced by George Barnett.
The band will perform the new material at the London venue EartH on June 12th, and George Barnett has mentioned: “This album is both more surreal and somehow more direct than anything we’ve ever done…”
The album is currently available for pre-order and is accompanied by two tracks: the atmospheric ‘Bells’ and the elegant ‘Industrial Love Song,’ featuring Caroline Polachek.
Regarding ‘Bells,’ Jack explains: “This song originated from a field recording of a bell we captured in a small Orthodox Greek church. You can hear it in the track, which developed from that. That single bell strike set much of the album’s direction.”
“‘Industrial Love Song’ depicts a duet between two cranes at a construction site,” Jack Barnett describes. “Caroline sings one crane's part, and I handle the other; their movements are controlled by the operator, preventing them from touching, but as the sun rises, they hope their shadows will intersect. I appreciate how George's title subverts expectations—it’s not typical industrial music.”
George adds, “It's challenging to assign a specific time period to this song. It’s progressive music created with instruments that have existed for centuries.”
Jack continues, “As we transition away from the mechanical era, we realize how much we share with our machines and how human they can be. Writing a love song from their viewpoint suddenly doesn't seem so bizarre.”
A music video for ‘Industrial Love Song’ has been released, created by the acclaimed artist and photographer Harley Weir alongside These New Puritans.
