The New Jersey band Gel has announced their breakup, citing “heinous acts” by guitarist Anthony Webster.
The group garnered attention through a series of intense performances, contributing to a resurgence of post-hardcore music from new perspectives. They released several EPs leading up to their 2023 album, ‘Only Constant,’ and their upcoming 2024 album, ‘Persona,’ which showcases their evolving creativity.
However, their journey has come to an end. In a statement, Gel confirmed their dissolution, revealing some shocking incidents from their time together.
Gel detailed “heinous acts” attributed to guitarist Anthony Webster that have caused “irreparable” damage to their career.
The band alleged that Anthony misappropriated “tens of thousands of dollars from us,” using the funds for rent, personal matters, and an “incredible amount of OnlyFans purchases and questionable CashApp transactions, likely of a similar nature.”
Gel accused the guitarist of “posting nude images of band members on Reddit for public viewing” and of placing them in “physically dangerous situations on multiple occasions,” including “frequently driving erratically like a maniac.”
This pattern of behavior affected the individual members deeply, who stated it “impacted us as human beings more than we can even try to explain.” They added, “It’s not easy to let go of something you care so much about, especially with external pressures from various organizations and people who are all depending on you in some capacity.”
In closing, Gel expressed, “We wish this could have all been simpler, and we regret that it had to conclude in this manner. We are fighters, and we persevered until it was simply no longer sustainable. We take pride in that.”
