Dutch Interior – Moneyball

      An accomplished and dynamic album...

Emerging from lifelong friendships, LA’s Dutch Interior has long been an exciting presence on the US indie scene. Their independent songwriting infuses a personal touch from each member before the group refines the tracks. Following several successful EPs, the band now unveils their new release, “Moneyball,” which uniquely merges styles and marks the entry of an eclectic collective that is remarkably at ease with one another, crafting a fresh fusion.

The opening track, ‘Canada,’ is a gradual burn characterized by vocals that are almost whispered at times, creating a deeply personal atmosphere. At five minutes long, a lingering sense of danger resides in the background, contrasted by its moody vibe, before the song ignites in its concluding moments.

Described by the band as a “fucked up Fleetwood Mac song,” ‘Sandcastle Molds’ definitely encapsulates a chaotic and offbeat essence, marked by almost jazz-like drumbeats that lead into surf rock-inspired vocals, exuding summer vibes. The enjoyment lies in the chaotic energy, with numerous elements in play—jangly guitars complemented by brass and wind instruments clearly present in the mix. Despite the dynamic arrangement, it maintains a perfect equilibrium between tranquility and upheaval.

Conversely, ‘Wood Knot’ embodies a softer rock, near indie folk quality, featuring beautiful slide guitar that highlights the talents of each member. This track serves as a soothing remedy following the slightly rowdy nature of the first two songs, illustrating the diverse influences and genres Dutch Interior comfortably navigates. ‘Horse’ also conveys a similar aura, bringing a sunny, almost country feel, distinctly contrasting some of the more haunting segments.

‘Life So Crazy’ presents a darker, echo-laden vibe, with subdued vocals that require attentive listening to fully grasp, raw and imbued with emotion. It beautifully captures the angst of grunge and 90s alternative music without excess.

Dutch Interior’s new album fulfills the anticipation surrounding them with an exquisite mix of country, folk, grunge, and much more. They’re challenging to categorize, but witnessing such an ambitious debut that successfully executes its daring ambitions is thrilling. They are certainly a band to keep an eye on throughout 2025 and beyond. It’s astonishing to think this album showcases musicianship and lyricism that many established bands could find challenging to replicate.
