Robert Plant once described this Led Zeppelin classic as "pompous."

Robert Plant is a pivotal figure in rock history, known as one of the most significant frontmen of the 1970s. He propelled Led Zeppelin to extraordinary heights, and his unique voice has inspired countless rock vocalists, achieving almost unmatched success. In more recent years, however, he has expressed harsh criticism of his earlier work, particularly regarding the band’s legendary track ‘Stairway To Heaven.’

A fundamental element of music, ‘Stairway To Heaven’ features an introduction that aspiring guitarists mimic so frequently that music stores often ban its playing.

The trope was even parodied in Wayne’s World…

In a 1988 interview with Q, Plant acknowledged the criticisms of the song, admitting they have merit. “If you completely dislike ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ you can’t be blamed for it because it was quite pompous," he stated.

"Depending on the day, I have a different interpretation of the song – and I penned the lyrics,” he noted. “Lyrically, I can’t connect with it now, as it was so long ago. I would never intend to write in such abstract terms again.”

Led Zeppelin’s brief reunion in 2007 included a performance of ‘Stairway To Heaven,’ but in a 2013 interview, Plant reiterated his dislike for the song.

“It belongs to a specific time. If I had been involved in the instrumentation, I might view it as a magnificent piece of music with its own identity and character. It even accelerates similarly to some more sophisticated works.”

“But my role was to write lyrics and sing about fate, something distinctly British, almost abstract, emerging from the mind of a 23-year-old. It came at a time when 23-year-old guys were prominent.”
