Neo-soul icon Erykah Badu appears to have finished a new album in collaboration with The Alchemist.
The highly regarded songwriter boasts a remarkable catalog, beginning with her celebrated debut album ‘Baduizm’ and extending into the 21st century. An engaging – albeit sometimes unpredictable – live performer, her voice is a truly remarkable instrument.
Honored as a Women In Music Icon by Billboard, Erykah Badu participated in a rare interview with the U.S. publication, where she disclosed that she is nearing the release of a new album.
This forthcoming record, which has yet to be named, will be her first since 2010’s ‘New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)’ – although she did release a mixtape in 2015.
Adding to the excitement, The Alchemist appears to be solely handling production – a notable figure in hip-hop, he has collaborated with Freddie Gibbs, Ghostface Killah, Earl Sweatshirt, and others.
“Rap represents the people. Hip-hop embodies the people. It’s about the community. It’s the tribe,” she mentions during her conversation with Billboard. “I have the privilege of witnessing my children grow up, loving them, and encouraging them immensely, and I can’t help but think of them when I see artists of their age emerging. That’s their experience. They’re upholding the tradition.”
