Album Review
3-5 Stars A formidable and forceful fifth album.
Reviewer: Brad Sked
Released: 4th April 2025
Label: Rocket Recordings
‘Death Hilarious’ emerges as a formidable fifth album from Pigs x7. Beginning with rocket-like velocity, the opener ‘Blockade’ is a fierce whirlwind of sludgy space rock, with Matthew Baty’s Lemmy-like growl cutting through the tumultuous soundscape. This fuzzy madness continues; the single ‘Stiches’ evokes a dream collaboration between Black Sabbath and Hawkwind, while ‘Glib Tongued’ features a unique partnership with Run The Jewels' El-P. Their contribution fits well, layering a sharp lyrical style over the band’s menacing sludge. Meanwhile, ‘The Wyrm’ channels the creative energy of labelmates Goat with its shamanic psychedelic outburst. The album concludes with the eight-minute, doom-laden, and extremely ear-damaging ‘Toecurler,’ making it clear: this is not for casual listening. However, for those looking to metaphorically vanquish a legion of deities in the realm of the damned, this is just what you need.
