Djo - The Core

While Joe Keery is perhaps most recognized for his acting, that is by no means his only talent. A former member of the psych-rock band Post Animal, the versatile artist has been releasing music under the name Djo for several years, with two electronic-infused albums (2019's 'Twenty Twenty' and 2022's 'DECIDE') and a viral hit (the TikTok favorite 'End Of Beginning'). However, his third solo project is a more substantial endeavor—an ambitious, joyful, and heartfelt compilation that showcases his enjoyment of analog instruments, broad arrangements, and unabashedly nostalgic sound elements. Listening to ‘The Crux’ feels like taking a guided tour through a young Joe’s record collection: the influential sounds of The Strokes and Tame Impala can be felt (as heard in the vocal delivery of opener ‘Lonesome Is A State Of Mind’ and the subtle funk of ‘Delete Ya’), and, looking further back, the sparkling influence of Marc Bolan is evident in the energetic glam-rock tracks ‘Link’ and ‘Gap Tooth Smile’. Meanwhile, ‘Charlie’s Garden’ channels the essence of ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ with its precise keys, dynamic changes, and even a lively brass solo—evoking ‘A Day In The Life’ in a way that encourages listeners to set aside their cynicism and embrace its exuberance. Furthermore, while the album's sounds pay tribute to the past, any hint of clichéd themes is dispelled by its refreshing narrative arc, as Joe reevaluates his priorities following a life-changing breakup, finding comfort in steadfast friendships and family connections—a sentiment beautifully captured in the uplifting chorus of ‘Back On You’, which could touch even the toughest hearts. With credits on ‘The Crux’ that encompass vocals, guitar, bass, drums, percussion, piano, and Mellotron (along with co-production), it’s clear that Joe is a highly skilled musician; even better, for someone with his cultural significance, is the evident joy he derives from his craft.
