Black Country, New Road - Forever Howlong

‘Forever Howlong’ is so different from Black Country, New Road’s previous albums that one might think it was created by another band entirely. If ‘Live at Bush Hall’ (2023) marked their hesitant initial attempt to find their footing following the unexpected departure of vocalist Isaac Wood in 2022, then ‘Forever Howlong’ represents their joyous resurgence. Under the skilled direction of producer James Ford (Fontaines DC, Arctic Monkeys, Blur), and with Tyler Hyde, May Kershaw, and Georgia Ellery taking on vocal responsibilities, BCNR have completely moved away from their post-punk origins, embracing a vibrant mixture of folk, baroque pop, and alternative rock. The band crafted ‘Forever Howlong’ in real-time, performing its songs live repeatedly, allowing them to develop organically until they reached their final version. This spontaneity is evident in the magnificent orchestral buildup of ‘For the Cold Country,’ which resonates like an energetic jam session recorded on tape. Conversely, the title track features meandering lyrics about beans, vitamin B, and microbiome pH that flow like a spontaneous stream of consciousness atop a surreal blend of strings and recorders.

The album is also the band’s most uplifting work to date, highlighted by the presence of harpsichord, banjo, bass clarinet, timpani, and recorders. Despite the somber and at times grim lyrics, the instrumentals of ‘Salem Sister’ and ‘The Big Spin’ are charmingly whimsical, while the exhilarating string and saxophone arrangements in ‘Nancy Takes the Night’ provide a stunning introduction to what could be considered the album’s standout track. Similarly, the lively harpsichord that opens the lead single and opening track ‘Besties’ clearly shows that BCNR continues to be as daring and unpredictable as ever. Through the transformation of their sound, lyrics, and vocalists, ‘Forever Howlong’ redefines BCNR's identity. Nevertheless, one thing remains unchanged: their relentless pursuit of reinventing the potential of their music.
