Hello and welcome back to DIY’s feature, Get To Know… This section is designed to bring you closer to some of the most exciting acts that have recently caught our attention and to explore what drives them. For those in the loop, Dutch Interior, a six-member band based in LA County, is one of California's hidden gems, having released several self-produced projects and secured opening slots with well-known acts like DIIV and julie. Now, with the launch of their label debut ‘Moneyball,’ the band is preparing for their first significant trip across the Atlantic, performing at events like End Of The Road and Manchester Psych Fest, showcasing their album's intriguing blend of delicate Americana, shoegaze fuzz, and raw indie. We spoke with them as ‘Moneyball’ was released and ahead of their inaugural UK shows this summer to learn more about their instinctive creative bond.
Hey everyone, congratulations on the launch of ‘Moneyball’! How have you been marking the occasion of your label debut?
Jack Nugent: Thanks! Last week we celebrated with a big dinner with our team, an acoustic set at Going Underground in LA, and an amazing party with friends at Well Wishes. Now, we’re on tour with Frog, performing new songs for audiences and selling records, which has been a blast.
What are your earliest musical memories?
Shane Barton: Drawing with crayon on my dad’s drums as a kid.
Conner Reeves: Listening to Guns N’ Roses in my dad’s car.
Jack: There was a Klaxons song called ‘Gravity’s Rainbow’ that I fell in love with while playing a skateboarding game when I was young. I recently revisited it, and it still sounds great.
Hayden Barton: Watching They Might Be Giants at the House of Blues.
Noah Kurtz: Taking piano lessons when I was about five years old.
You come from LA and Long Beach—what was the musical landscape like growing up there? And how do you feel about the current music scene?
We all actually grew up in Orange County and later moved to LA/LB in our early adulthood; some for college and others to escape OC. While growing up, we created a lot of music in our bedrooms mainly due to the absence of a strong music scene. We’re not very connected to the OC music scene now, but the LA music scene is thriving at the moment with many exciting bands that the world will hopefully hear soon; check out Untitled (halo), Bondo, Alex Amen, Urikas Bedroom, Touching Ice, Dance Arts Center, and Ologist.
As a group of lifelong friends, how does this impact your band dynamic? Do you find that you’re aligned creatively, or does it sometimes complicate things when opinions differ?
Shane: We don’t always see eye to eye, but we trust each other’s instincts when it comes to decisions. This really smooths things out and allows us to support one another when someone needs a break or isn’t feeling confident about a particular song.
The joint event is scheduled for Saturday, July 13th, marking the last day of the festival.
The band has transformed their reunion show into a complete tour in response to the overwhelming enthusiasm from fans.
