A new album from the late Mark Stewart is set to be released on July 11th.
The influential UK musician passed away in April 2023, leaving behind an impressive body of work. From his time leading the iconic post-punk band The Pop Group to the various forms of Maffia, Mark Stewart made a significant mark on contemporary music.
Just before his death, Mark Stewart completed one final album, which is scheduled for release later this year.
Titled ‘The Fateful Symmetry,’ the album will be released by long-time partner Mute and includes nine musical tracks.
The opening track, ‘Memory Of You,’ is available now. Co-produced with Youth (Killing Joke) and featuring backing vocals from Hollie Cook, the rich sonics disguise a post-disco ballad.
Described as a contemporary version of a Mudd Club jam, the lyrics skillfully intertwine personal and political themes. As Mark himself once expressed:
“There’s a way of using a love song as a Trojan Horse, putting sugar on the poison to invade people’s minds. On the surface, it’s about if I’d only loved [but] it’s about longing and dreaming of a better world. For me, love is a political act.”
According to Youth, “‘Memory of You’ not only showcases what a superb singer Mark was but also highlights his exceptional songwriting... the melody and lyrics could belong to the Walker Brothers or a 50s crooner like [Frank] Sinatra; timeless yet still ahead of its time.”
The short film for ‘Memory of You’ has been produced by filmmakers Peter Harris and Hugo Glendinning; you can watch it below.
