The folk-pop experimentalist provides a glimpse into her perfect night out.
Every month, we invite a different Very Special Guest Star to design their dream concert for our latest print magazine. For our March 2025 issue, we had the pleasure of featuring Dora Jar, a beloved figure in California's music scene known for her eclectic style, on DIY's esteemed back page.
Where will it take place?
At the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Northern California; everyone is enjoying themselves, smoking weed and dancing, creating an incredible atmosphere. It's where I attended my very first concert at the age of four, which made me realize I wanted to play guitar. The concert I went to was a weekend event benefiting The Bridge School, which my sister attended. It would be fantastic if my concert had a similar purpose—a weekend lineup focused on raising funds for special education, something I truly care about.
Who's headlining?
It’s going to be me! I’ll be the headliner. I imagine Tom Waits will join me as well… he’ll be opening for me! Let's also have Fleetwood Mac, ABBA, and Mary J. Blige. I’m passionate about diverse sounds, so I would never create a lineup of artists who all sound the same—this is a reflection of everything I love.
Who’s supporting?
The supporting acts will include Kara Jackson, Oklou, Alex G, Nourished By Time, MAY, Cameron Winter… Did I mention Yo-Yo Ma? His performances with the Silk Road Orchestra would be incredible.
Who are you going with?
It’ll be me, my crew, my band, and anyone else who wants to join. I’d love for Mary Poppins to be there, sitting in the front row with her umbrella—she’ll be enjoying the music from Yo-Yo Ma. Winnie The Pooh and the Powerpuff Girls will also be in attendance.
What are you eating?
We’ll have ribs, rice, and peas. And soup—lots of different soups! We’ll enjoy warm, hearty food at large communal tables backstage.
Pre-gig activities?
No, we kick off around 1 PM, and you’ll likely be waking up at noon since you were chatting around a campfire the night before.
Is there an afterparty?
It’ll continue all night long—focused on the music and dancing.
Any additional extras?
Absolutely! There’s going to be four square; a make-your-own cotton candy station; and a cookie decorating station with every color of frosting and sprinkles. The rule will be that you can’t keep your own cookie—you have to give it away. It will be called Sugar Mountain!
