Gwenno is set to launch her new album ‘Utopia’ on July 11th.
The Mercury-nominated Welsh artist has captured our hearts with a series of remarkable and immersive albums, melding Welsh and Cornish lyrical elements with inventive synth-pop sounds.
With ‘Utopia,’ the artist is ready to experiment once again. If her earlier trilogy reflects her “childhood” phase, the content of this forthcoming album marks a transition into adulthood.
Interestingly, it grounds itself in America and reflects her own formative experiences, illustrating her journey from being part of The Pipettes to her subsequent solo ventures. This songwriting reflects on themes of parenthood and the journey of self-identity, bringing Gwenno back to her foundational roots.
“I feel like I’ve produced a debut album, as it represents a different language and a different chapter in my life,” she shares. “It’s about that moment when I venture out into the world independently, which is often the focus of first-time writers, who then move on with their lives. But it has taken me a long time to process this — I needed 20 years to understand it, and I realized that the starting point of my creative journey isn’t Wales; it’s actually North America.”
Her new single ‘Dancing On Volcanoes’ is available now – a pop track with a hint of Americana, showcasing Gwenno's skillful and deeply resonant songwriting.
