The Army, The Navy Discuss Their Struggles: Emerging Duo Shares Insights on Touring, New Music, Personal Mantras, and the Importance of Community - Atwood Magazine

Emerging pop duo The Army, The Navy discusses their inaugural headlining tour, the significance of building meaningful connections with fans, and their upcoming music set to release this spring in an interview with Atwood Magazine.

As I connect with The Army, The Navy for this interview, it coincides with the first night of their debut headlining tour. The duo, in a hotel room in Phoenix, Arizona, is filled with a mix of excitement, nerves, and profound gratitude. “It feels absolutely surreal,” expresses Maia Ciambrello, one half of the duo. “It feels real, big, exciting, and scary! We are just incredibly lucky and thankful to embark on this journey, especially with those who mean so much to us.”

The Army, The Navy, consisting of childhood friends Sasha Goldberg and Maia Ciambriello, has experienced a remarkable rise over the past year. From going viral on TikTok thanks to their intricate harmonies to releasing their EPs Fruit for Flies and Sugar for Bugs through New Gold Medal, and opening for Dora Jar’s 2024 No Way to Relax When You Are On Fire Tour, they have developed a dedicated following of fans both online and in person.

At its core, the story of The Army, The Navy is one of friendship; it narrates two friends, united by a lifelong passion for music and faith in one another, aiming to make their mark on the world through heartfelt songs.

Having both grown up in the Bay Area, Goldberg and Ciambriello took voice lessons from the same vocal coach, Amber Morris. Encouraged by her to apply to Loyola University New Orleans for music studies, they moved south together and shared a dorm room. It was during this time that their friendship deepened, they got matching tattoos, and began crafting music together.

The rest is an unfolding history.

A CONVERSATION WITH THE ARMY, THE NAVY

Atwood Magazine: Congratulations on your first headlining tour—it’s a significant milestone! Witnessing your journey over the past year has been amazing. What are you most looking forward to on tour?

The Army, The Navy: Everything. We’re thrilled and don’t know what to expect. We can't wait to see people in the audience who know the songs and hope to meet as many of them as possible. That’s always the highlight for us.

You’ve recently opened for some incredible artists, including Dora Jar! How has that experience prepared you for your own tour, if at all?

TATN: We’ve realized that headlining is entirely different from opening. We had more free time, traveled across the country in a Chrysler Pacifica, and would typically arrive at each venue with just our guitars and some merchandise. Now that we’re headlining, we have a complete set to prepare each night with lighting; we’re in a large van pulling a trailer, and it’s constantly non-stop. Sasha and I excel when we’re busy, and we’re thankful for our previous touring experiences. We’ve become adept at packing and have established routines that work for us.

That sounds great! Let’s discuss your new music for a moment: “Dirty Laundry” is your first single for 2025! You’ve shared teasers on social media over the last few months, and they’ve really resonated with many. What does this song signify for you, and why now feels like the right moment to release it?

TATN: This song was written a long time ago but was recently revitalized. We weren’t initially sure it had a place, but after sharing a clip of us singing it that gained popularity, we felt compelled to release it. The song is fun, representing a more pop-oriented sound for us. It’s playful and gives the vibe of wanting to stick my body out of a sunroof while driving down the interstate. We started this song ages ago and just finished it recently. It feels like a great next step for us.

Would you say this single represents a new beginning or a continuation of your projects Fruit for Flies and Sugar for Bugs?

TATN: Both yes and no! I think our sound will always be our sound; however, as we evolve as artists, our music will too. It will continue to grow and mature alongside us. “Dirty Laundry” leans more towards a pop realm, which we enjoy, but I envision our next project existing within the same indie space as our EPs, with a hint of pop and a more refined, polished feel. Even more The Army, The Navy.
