CLASH DJ Mix – dublon

dublon is an Oslo-based producer who weaves feel-good euphony and mindfulness into his eclectic jazz-house compositions. He shifted to production at the age of 14, refining his soothing sound following a residency in Norway's capital. His debut EP ‘Nectar’, released today by Delicieuse Musique, is a serene blend of his core influences—pop, electronic, classical, and jazz—drawing inspiration from the transformative energy of after-hours scenes and memories of Scandinavian summers along the coast. Collaborating with artists such as Nathan Haines, the Stockholm collective TABLE, Texan musician Deza, and Tour-Maubourg, 'Nectar' firmly establishes dublon in the beat-driven Soultronic genre.

As he tests a sound that smoothly transitions between club vibes and noir elegance, culminating in a headline performance at The Jazz Cafe in London, dublon shares his origin story with CLASH while providing an exclusive mix of tranquil bliss. Tune in now.

Where are you from in Norway?

I hail from a small coastal town named Risør, located in the southern part of Norway.

Do you come from a musical family?

My mother has played piano and sang since childhood, while my father has been involved in musical theatre for many years. Additionally, all my siblings have played various instruments, including the violin, cello, trumpet, and bass throughout my upbringing.

At what age did you begin exploring music as a creative outlet?

I started playing classical violin at the age of seven, inspired by my older sister. I also played drums for a few years before I transitioned to music production on my laptop at 14.

Your music reflects your Norwegian roots, possessing a vivid sense of place and the people within it. What makes Norway unique, and how does it influence your creativity?

Firstly, Norway is extremely cold in winter, so I don’t regret spending nearly all my time in the studio from October to April. Moreover, the ‘Nectar’ project draws inspiration from Scandinavian summers and culture.

How did you develop the jazz-house hybrid sound that has become your trademark? Which artists or albums in the jazz and electronic genres influenced your musical journey?

It all began with a DJ residency at a high-end hotel in Oslo. I felt the need to create music suitable for those in suits and elegant dresses while also being appropriate for a Saturday evening drink. During my research, I discovered artists like Chaos in the CBD, Tour-Maubourg, St Germain, and a new artist only releasing one song, Berlioz.

Can you identify a live performance by an electronic artist that inspired you?

I saw Chaos in the CBD perform live in Oslo last year, which was my first time experiencing them. Their show was exceptional, with an impressive song selection, mixing, and overall atmosphere. I envied their record collection.

As a producer, what is your approach? Does melody come first followed by the feeling? Do you enter the studio with a clear vision of what you want to create?

Typically, I begin by crafting a groove. In the house genre, it’s crucial that the groove stands out on its own. After that, I experiment with chords on the piano until I find something refreshing. Often, I collaborate with a talented pianist, Ole Petter, who adds chords and solos over my ideas. I also try to envision a location or emotion while working on the tracks, like being in an oyster bar or enjoying a summer in Paris.

Why did you choose the title ‘Nectar’ for your debut EP?

I believe ‘Nectar’ aptly captures the essence of the EP’s sound—soft, natural/raw tones combined with electronic house elements. Additionally, I find the word visually appealing!

Which track from the EP is your favorite?

My favorite track from the EP is ‘As If’. It underwent significant changes and came together just weeks before the deadline. I love its slow yet groovy vibe, making it suitable for a club setting. I collaborated with some fantastic musicians on this track: Ole Petter Ålgård on keys, Anders Hefre on sax, and Elias Løstegaard on bass.

Tell me about your collaborators on this EP and what they contributed.

I’m thrilled to have worked with amazing musicians and artists on my debut EP. Deza, a good friend with whom I've collaborated for four years, is an exceptional singer, songwriter, and producer whose talent always impresses me. I've been inspired by Tour-Maubourg since I discovered jazzy house music, so I’m delighted to have him involved. Nathan Haines was a dream collaborator; his sax and flute solos are incredible, and I had been a fan of his music long before I invited him to join. Lastly, the Swedish production group TABLE, with whom I've exchanged demos for over a year, were great additions to the EP.

What emotions do you hope to evoke in listeners experiencing ‘Nectar’ from beginning to end?

I want listeners to feel as if they
