Employed To Serve are as incredibly enjoyable as they are powerfully heavy. The five-member band from Woking, led by the husband-and-wife team of vocalist Justine Jones and guitarist Sammy Urwin, are true metal enthusiasts who instinctively appreciate the exhilarating excitement of crushing riffs and monumental grooves. Their fifth full-length album, ‘Fallen Star’, is a true pleasure, largely because it’s so approachable. Modern tech metal often seems to engage in a competition to produce an even more over-the-top and intense version of itself. However, while the band frequently delivers some exceptionally heavy material (try not to grin during the breakdown at the end of ‘Now Thy Kingdom Come’), these 11 tracks direct their intensity into infectious grooves (the dynamic opener ‘Treachery’ is a fierce standout) and an increased emphasis on Urwin’s clean vocals (check out the soaring, Rolo Tomassi-like choruses in the title track). Employed To Serve is currently one of the UK’s finest and most cherished metal bands, and ‘Fallen Star’ excellently broadens the scope of their joyously heavy universe.
