Just a few weeks after revealing extensive touring plans, Australia's most active band, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, has announced their 27th (!!) album. Titled ‘Phantom Island’ and following last year's release ‘Flight b741,’ this latest offering from the psych-rock maestros is slated for release on June 13 through (p)doom records and will feature ten tracks. Additionally, the album's inception—incorporating elements of strings, horns, and woodwind—started when the band performed at the Hollywood Bowl in June 2023 and connected with some members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, who would unintentionally inspire the project. “The songs seemed to require this additional energy and color, that we needed to apply some different paint to the canvas,” says Stu Mackenzie of the band regarding their collaboration with British historical keyboardist, conductor, and arranger Chad Kelly, whose orchestration is included on the album. “He brings a deep wealth of musical knowledge to his adaptable arrangements. We originate from such different backgrounds—he performs Mozart and Bach using the same harpsichords as they did, tuned in the exact same manner. But he also shares my fascination with microtonal music and all that nerdy stuff.” In addition to the album announcement, the band has released its lead single, ‘Deadstick,’ along with a video directed by Guy Tyzack. “I began with the intention of creating a scene that resembled a landscape painting, filled with various people and set pieces scattered throughout,” explains Tyzack about the video. “‘Deadstick’ is a term for when a plane propeller stops while in flight, so I decided to depict a huge cardboard plane crash-landing in a stunning setting. The song is big and chaotic, so I cast swing dancers and quirky extras to populate the landscape.” Watch the video for ‘Deadstick’ below and check out the band's previously announced UK/EU Rave/Orchestra tour dates listed under the video.
