Samia is on the rise. Following her impressive breakout in 2023 with ‘Honey,’ the songwriter has established new roots, trading Nashville for Minneapolis. This city, rich in its own history, has allowed her to form a new team that encourages her to be both open and challenged. Caleb Wright, from her favorite band The Happy Children, collaborates on production, alongside nearby resident Jake Luppen of indie darlings hippo campus. The outcome balances past achievements while forward-looking – the new album ‘Bloodless’ is captivating, often intriguing, and a project that emphasizes her strengths.
Shifting between lyrics that are emotionally sharp to those that are laugh-out-loud amusing, ‘Bloodless’ possesses a narrative quality. Tracks such as ‘Hole In A Frame’ and the standout ‘Fair Game’ reflect her affinity for Americana-tinged indie, while ‘Lizard’ is set against a backdrop of synths, resembling a digital-inspired Heartland anthem.
‘Craziest Person’ strips down the arrangement, with the minimalist guitar perfectly complementing Samia’s delicate vocals. A consistently strong record from start to finish, ‘Bloodless’ adheres to its distinct structure – ‘Carousel’ serves as a subtle highlight, whereas ‘North Poles’ expands in scope, allowing Samia to convey deeper emotions. It's an immersive experience that compels you to hit ‘play’ as the closing track ‘Pants’ brings the journey to an end; ‘Bloodless’ is sure to captivate anyone who discovered ‘Honey’ while also winning over new listeners. On ‘Bovine Excision,’ Samia expresses “I wanna be untouchable…” and based on this evidence, she comes quite close.
