      A CONVERSATION WITH COOPER PHILLIP

Atwood Magazine: How did Biophonics begin?

Cooper Phillip: At 17, I faced severe asthma, and no doctor or treatment seemed effective. Singing was my passion, but my voice was unpredictable—sometimes I could hit every note, and other times, I was completely hoarse. That’s when I encountered Peter Goncharuk, a Ukrainian scientist and the creator of the Biophonics breathing correction method.

In just three sessions, he transformed my breathing completely, and my life changed dramatically. Not only did I recover from asthma, but I also lost over 40 pounds that I had gained from years of hormonal therapy and steroids. My voice improved, my health got better, and for the first time, I felt entirely in control of my instrument.

The impact was so significant that I quickly began sharing this method with other singers. Even at 17-18 years old, I recognized the power of this knowledge—how it could save voices, restore health, and unlock potential. What started as my healing journey naturally evolved into a much larger movement, and today, Biophonics continues to transform lives.

What do you consider the most vital aspect of vocal training?

Cooper Phillip: To me, the cornerstone of vocal training is breathing—correct, effective breathing that supports the voice while promoting health, consistency, and longevity in singing. Developing a habit of proper breath control was crucial to unlocking resonance within my body and radically transforming my vocal ability and career.

However, breathing alone isn’t sufficient. Connecting with the body is equally important, yet often overlooked. Before we engage in vocal exercises or breathing warm-ups, we need to prepare the body through stretches, body alignment, and tension relief. The body can store trigger points, tension, and mental blocks, all of which may restrict vocal freedom.

A thorough body scan before singing helps identify these blocks, enabling a deeper and more natural vocal connection. Breathing serves as a link between the body and voice, and what we perceive as sound is merely the result of everything happening within us. Authentic vocal mastery starts within the body.

What makes your practices so effective?

Cooper Phillip: Honestly? It’s my passion and a genuine desire to help people discover their voices. I never anticipated becoming a vocal coach at such a young age, but my love for the art and my commitment to helping singers thrive have shaped my approach into something truly significant.

Most vocal techniques focus on one aspect of the voice, but I believe that the voice mirrors everything occurring in the body—both mentally and physically. Therefore, my method is built on three key pillars:

      1. Body Alignment & Tension Release – Before even contemplating singing, the body must be balanced and
