Amid the rows of velvet seats at the Majestic Theater, Bailey Spinn discovered her path as a musician. “Growing up, I watched many Broadway shows in New York with my dad,” Spinn recalls. “I also played several instruments and always had a passion for singing.” Creativity has been a central theme in her life, eventually leading her to start a career as a TikTok influencer.
As part of the YouTube generation, Spinn sought a contemporary platform for content creation. “When TikTok emerged, I recognized it as a chance to begin posting and making short-form content.” Her career took off long before she hit stages nationwide, with her “POV” (Point of View) videos attracting millions of followers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While millennials often critique Gen Z (1997–2012) for hesitating to be “cringe” or share their true selves due to the constant online scrutiny, Spinn found that creating short-form, character-driven content allowed her to be more at ease with public expression. “After about two years of doing social media, I started sharing covers, and then I transitioned into my own music,” she reveals. “I gradually shifted from social media to music while integrating it into my content for both my comfort and my audience's.”
In 2024, Spinn cleared her social media accounts and began posting solely music content, despite having made her music debut in 2023. Her EP My Worst Enemy achieved great success, accumulating millions of streams and leading to a national tour. Throughout 2024, she released several singles, culminating in her debut album, Loser, in March of this year.
Spinn shares, “I draw from my personal relationships and the emotions I’m experiencing.” She mentions her special “Avril Lavigne notebook” and a pink fluffy pen that she uses to write all her songs, describing it as her lucky charm. “I’m quite old-fashioned in that regard. I prefer writing by hand to typing on a computer.”
Loser highlights Spinn’s development and versatility as a songwriter. “I’ve been able to explore more fictional scenarios—topics that may be relatable even if I haven’t personally experienced them. Ultimately, it’s about artistry and discovering what you can create,” she explains.
Spinn names Olivia Rodrigo, Pierce the Veil, and Avril Lavigne as significant musical influences. The album's creation also encouraged her to experiment outside her usual genres. “There are elements of pop-rock, heavier rock, 2000s vibes, and fully orchestrated ballads,” she says. “I’ve explored various styles because I love rock music, wanting to cover all my bases with this album."
For emerging creatives, novelty can be both exciting and intimidating. While some artists may feel embarrassed by their earlier work, Spinn's experience as an influencer has helped her find confidence at every level of her career. “I’ve learned a great deal about myself and how at ease I am in front of a camera,” she states. “I know what to expect in interviews and how I wish to present myself.”
In a creative realm, success is often linked with visibility. In the digital age, parasocial relationships can complicate connections between artists and their fans. “I aim to be honest in all my interviews, but there are still aspects of myself I choose to keep private,” Spinn shares. “There’s no obligation to reveal everything; I've established boundaries about what I prefer to share online, which makes me much more comfortable.”
Her social media journey has influenced how she interacts with her fanbase offline, and while some artists might cringe at their earlier digital presence, Spinn embraces it. “I'm proud of all my past projects, knowing I loved them back then; they may change, but I'm evolving alongside them. It’s rewarding to witness growth within those works.”
Social media provides fans with unique access to artists. While fans easily express admiration for musicians’ work, negative criticism is equally available. Spinn has opted to focus on positivity, particularly during live performances.
The Happy Ending Tour was Spinn’s first extensive tour. “I had performed at three small shows when I released my first EP,” she recalls. “Now that I’ve completed a full tour, I feel much more confident as a performer—not only on stage and knowing my presence but also in simplifying my approach to truly connect with the audience.”
