"Making music is a form of practicing magic."

       — Alaska Reid

The elements of magic or the otherworldly appear to be woven throughout your debut EP, ‘Beast’. What do you think accounts for your strong creative connection to these motifs, or what makes them artistically captivating or inspiring for you?

Alaska: Art possesses a magical quality; it surpasses time. Through music and literature, I feel as though I can connect with individuals from entirely different eras and locations. There are places that exist solely in my mind, brought to life through art and my own creativity. To me, writing—and specifically, creating music—is a way to engage in magic, which is why I enjoy blending that concept with a more conventional understanding of “magic.”

In the initial months of the year, you have been building hype for ‘Beast’ through word of mouth and energetic live performances. How do you convey Witch Post’s artistic vision during live shows?

Alaska: We focus on crafting songs that can sustain a live performance without unnecessary embellishments. While we aspire to expand our show with additional instruments, ultimately, the performance can still thrive with just me, Dylan, and our guitars.

If you could take one album, one book, and one film to a deserted island, what would they be (and why)?

Dylan: It's hard to choose just one, but based on what I've been enjoying lately: my album would be ‘Nobody Loves You More’ by Kim Deal, which I am really into right now; my book would be Wayward by Vashti Bunyan, it's a fantastic story; and for my film, I'm uncertain since I don't watch movies often enough to find one I'd want to see repeatedly.

Alaska: Album: Yo-Yo Ma, ‘J.S. Bach: The 6 Unaccompanied Cello Suites Complete’. This has been a bedtime staple for me. Book: Since my entire family writes in some form, I’d choose anything they've created, or I might opt for the book I’m currently writing because I need to finish it. Film: Robert Altman’s Nashville. It’s a stunning film focused on music, and I still need to watch it several more times to grasp its depth.

Lastly, if DIY guests were coming for dinner, what would you prepare?

Dylan: Chicken noodle soup—it's one of my specialities. As a Scot, I don't usually brag, but I make my own chicken stock, and I must say it’s really good.
