Blondshell - If You Requested An Image

In the two years following her self-titled debut, Blondshell, Sabrina Teitelbaum has not only emerged from the underground scene but has also secured multiple celebrated late-night television appearances, made her way into both the US and UK Top 100 charts, and sold out shows worldwide—both as a headliner and while supporting acclaimed artist Liz Phair. Her second album, ‘If You Asked For A Picture’, reflects the significant boost in confidence that these achievements have provided, resulting in a collection of candid reflections on relationships, family, and emotional struggles where Sabrina illustrates her comfort with life's ambiguities. This uncertainty manifests thematically but not sonically. While her debut was heavily influenced by grungy alt-rock, ‘If You Asked For A Picture’ elevates the intensity of its guitar-driven, catchy, melancholic melodies—never feeling completely defeated, yet also not joyful. In the captivating pre-release single ‘Two Times’, she contemplates, “How bad does it have to hurt to count?”, questioning conventional perceptions of love and seeking comfort in the ambiguous middle ground. Likewise, ‘He Wants Me’ examines happiness not as a straightforward dichotomy (“I think I lost my centre / But it’s just in my body”), but as a complex phenomenon, thoughtfully considering its essence and the places we search for it. This album is notably less straightforward than her debut, leaning towards a more introspective approach.
