Gina Birch Unveils Upcoming Album 'Trouble'

Gina Birch will unveil her new album ‘Trouble’ on July 11th.

The English musician was an integral part of The Raincoats, a band whose distinctive sound has had a lasting impact. As part of a collective of visual and audio artists inspired by the punk movement, Gina’s work embodies feminist principles both in its ideology and practice, a sentiment that surfaced again in her acclaimed 2023 solo album ‘I Play My Bass Loud’.

Coincidentally, last year Tate Britain hosted the Women In Revolt exhibition, an impressive overview of feminist art from the early to mid-70s up until the brink of the 90s.

Inspired by this, Gina’s art – along with that of her friends and contemporaries – was showcased in the exhibition, and revisiting this experience invigorated her songwriting.

The new album ‘Trouble’ will be available on July 11th, with Gina Birch set to kick off the album release with a concert on July 16th at Rough Trade East in London.

The new single ‘Causing Trouble Again’ is currently available, marking an incisive comeback that features a video shot by Dean Chalkley, showcasing a stellar group of female artists.

The video includes longtime friend and co-founder of The Raincoats, Ana da Silva, Neo Naturists co-founder Christine Binnie, singer-songwriter Amy Rigby, X-Ray Spex and Essential Logic co-founder Lora Logic, painter Daisy Parris, artist Georgina Starr, writer Jill Westwood, multi-disciplinary artist and activist Bobby Baker, award-winning costume designer Annie Symons, veteran photographer and Raincoats collaborator Shirley O’Loughlin, among others.

“For the ‘Causing Trouble Again’ video, after hearing Bob Dylan sing about a white ladder covered in water, I became fascinated with white ladders,” Gina Birch said. “I chose to use five white ladders, three of which had seven rungs. I later realized this symbolizes Jacob’s Ladder and a connection from Earth to heaven, but I was more focused on ladders as a representation of progress and ascent. I aimed to create a choreographed movement involving four of us with the ladders. How do we interact with ladders? Do we work together, do we struggle, do we dance?”

“I also wanted to pay homage to the wind scene from the film, The Colour of Pomegranates, and to include as many women artists from the Women in Revolt exhibition as possible. I envisioned them being mischievous or simply shouting ‘Causing trouble!’ I ended up inviting all the artist musicians I knew who could participate in the shoot, resulting in a wonderful convergence of incredible women, many of whom had never met each other before.”

      Tune in now.
