The Who will embark on a farewell tour in North America later this year.
The iconic British rock band held a highly confidential press conference today in London – May 8th – where Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend teased a significant announcement. Presenting the American football helmet featured on their ‘Odds N Sods’ album, they disclosed their plans for a tour – specifically, a farewell tour.
The band will say goodbye to North America with an extensive tour that will kick off in Florida on August 16th. During the press conference, singer Roger Daltrey remarked: “To me, America has always been exceptional. The cultural differences have greatly influenced me; this has always been the land of potential.”
“The dream of every musician in the early 60s was to achieve success on the US charts,” stated the frontman. “For The Who, that dream was realized in 1967, transforming our lives forever. The warmth of American audiences over the years has inspired me and brings back the feelings I experienced when I first heard rock music on the radio. Musical freedom! Rock music represented a sense of generational rebellion. To me, America has always been remarkable. The cultural differences have had a profound effect on me; this is the land of possibilities. It’s challenging to conclude such a significant part of my life that touring with The Who has represented. Thank you for your support, and I look forward to seeing you one last time.”
Pete Townshend added: “Well, all good things must come to an end. This is an emotional moment. For me, performing for American and Canadian audiences has always been extraordinary. The warmth and involvement of these audiences began back in 1967, with hippies sitting on blankets, deeply engaged in the music. Music was everywhere. We all felt a sense of equality.”
“Today, Roger and I still honor the late Keith Moon and John Entwistle, as well as all our long-time Who fans. I must say that while the road hasn't always been perfect for me, it typically has been a rewarding journey: the best job I could ever have asked for. I keep returning. Each time, I encounter new fans and feel fresh energy. Despite our age, Roger and I are in a good place, eager to support this heartfelt farewell to all our devoted fans and hopefully to new ones who might want to experience what they’ve missed over the last 57 years. This tour will celebrate cherished memories, love, and joy. We hope you will join us.”
Tickets will be available starting with a Citi presale and through the Who Fan Club beginning on Tuesday, May 13th. Additional presales will take place throughout the week before the general sale begins on Friday, May 16th at 10am local time at thewho.com/tour/.
