Incredible rhythms from the Australian band…
Surprise Chef is back with their new album ‘Superb.’
The ensemble is part of a network of musicians in Melbourne, a city known for its outstanding instrumental soul bands. With relaxed grooves, Surprise Chef's music possesses a distinctly cinematic vibe, reinterpreting vintage David Axelrod arrangements through a contemporary club perspective.
Last year, the prolific group undertook a live re-score of ‘Wake In Fright’, adding their unique spin to the Australian cult classic.
Revitalized by this experience, Surprise Chef returned to the studio, embracing creative freedom and independence. Their new album ‘Superb’ truly lives up to its name—it could easily be their finest release yet.
Bringing a palpable sense of enjoyment, Surprise Chef captivates listeners from start to finish, with 11 tracks driven by their deep passion for grooves.
The recording also features a raw element, allowing ideas to develop organically. Guitarist Lachlan Stuckey remarks…
“‘Superb’ represented a significant change in our process, clearly demonstrating how adjusting our perspective can influence the outcome of an album. We take our craft quite seriously; we care deeply about ensuring our music is purposeful and meaningful. While this approach has led to a number of records we’re very proud of, it has also restricted spontaneity and the unrestrained joy that can be stifled by our critical focus. Creating ‘Superb’ taught us that when we approach the process more relaxed, we end up with a completely different type of record.”
Now available, Surprise Chef will follow this release with a rare UK tour, kicking off in London’s EartH on September 9th, followed by shows in Manchester, Leeds, and Bristol.
